He won three Cy Young Awards and was a member of the World Series-winning Boston Red Sox team in 2004. In 2007 he became the 15th pitcher in major league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.

Martínez went 19-7 in 1998 and finished second in the American League Cy Young Award vote, then posted a season for the ages in 1999 – going 23-4 with a league-best 2.07 ERA and 313 strikeouts, winning the pitching Triple Crown.
