Sound barrier - Wikipedia
The sound barrier or sonic barrier is the large increase in aerodynamic drag and other undesirable effects experienced by an aircraft or other object when it approaches the speed of sound. When aircraft first approached the speed of sound, these effects were seen as constituting a barrier, making faster speeds very difficult or impossible.
First independently developed jet breaks the sound barrier over …

Independently funded jet's sound barrier mark revives talk of ...
Jan 29, 2025 · An aircraft developed by Boom Supersonic became the first independently funded jet to break the sound barrier this week. The XB-1 aircraft accelerated to Mach 1.05 at about 35,000 feet during a test flight Tuesday in the same Mojave Desert airspace in California where Charles “Chuck” Yeager was the first person to break the sound barrier in 1947. ...
Boom Supersonic breaks sound barrier for the first time
Jan 28, 2025 · At one point, however, XB-1 briefly broke the sound barrier once again. XB-1 surpassed Mach 1 yet again a few minutes later before landing 11:54 PM EST after a total flight time of 33.49 minutes.
Boom Supersonic's XB-1 smashes the sound barrier - Live Science

US civil supersonic jet breaks sound barrier in historic test flight
Jan 29, 2025 · The flight took place from California’s Mojave Air and Space Port. The XB-1 jet entered the supersonic corridor and reached an altitude of 35,290 feet before accelerating to Mach 1.122 (652 KTAS or 750mph). This is a historic achievement as it marks the first time an independently developed jet has broken the sound barrier.
Sound barrier | Supersonic Flight, Mach Number & Shock Waves
Dec 24, 2024 · Sound barrier, sharp rise in aerodynamic drag that occurs as an aircraft approaches the speed of sound and that was formerly an obstacle to supersonic flight. If an aircraft flies at somewhat less than sonic speed, the pressure waves (sound waves) it creates outspeed their sources and spread out
Research in Supersonic Flight and the Breaking of the Sound Barrier - NASA
Breaking the Sound Barrier. We began this chapter by transporting ourselves back to October 14, 1947, and riding with Chuck Yeager as he flew the Bell X-1 through the sound barrier, becoming the first human to fly faster than sound.
Breaking The Sound Barrier: The Science Of Supersonic Flight
Oct 23, 2023 · Essentially, supersonic flight means any type of flight where an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound. NASA's Edward Haering, a researcher studying sonic booms, describes it as...
NASA Poised to Break Sound Barrier in New Way
Oct 14, 2022 · Now, aeronautical innovators with NASA’s Quesst mission are poised to break the sound barrier again, only this time in a very different way that could make it possible for all of us to one day travel by air just as fast as any of the X-1 pilots who flew supersonic.
