When HIV-1 replicates, the provirus uses the cellular RNA polymerase II to create RNA copies of the HIV-1 genome, as well as viral mRNA that encodes the HIV-1 proteins. Transcription of the viral genome is driven by a promoter in the 5′ long terminal repeat of the integrated provirus.
