Mykhailo Mudryk is set to return to Chelsea's matchday squad on Thursday when they face Panathinaikos. Chelsea travel to Greece to face the Athens-based side in matchday two of the Conference League.

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. An equaliser from Nicolas Jackson – after Mohamed Salah put the Reds ahead with a penalty – was not enough for the Blues to take anything from Sunday’s Premier League clash, as Curtis Jones prodded home a second half winner.

Chelsea’s decline in recent seasons has taken the edge off it, but here they drew level within minutes of the restart. Jackson’s run was smart, kept onside by the stretch of Virgil van Dijk, and his finish cool under pressure from the chasing Andy Robertson.

Enzo Maresca has warned the Chelsea squad not to rely on Cole Palmer to carry them through their tough run of fixtures. 22-year-old Palmer already has six goals and five assists from just seven Premier League games heading into Sunday's meeting with Liverpool, establishing himself as one of the division's most in-form players.

Chelsea may have lost against league-leaders Liverpool on Sunday, failing to win at Anfield for the ninth time in the last ten years, but head coach Enzo Maresca seemed to suggest afterwards that if we can keep playing like we did, we will have plenty of wins to show for our efforts in the future.

The two clubs suffered a caustic relationship after Jose Mourinho claimed the Reds scored a “ghost goal” in the 2005 Champions League semi-final against Rafa Benitez’s side. The Reds enjoyed more success in Europe back then while the Blues won more trophies at home.
