A pair of adult female right whales, Koala and Curlew, have mystified researchers this winter as they cruised south along the Florida coast, then made a surprise appearance this week off Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

This video of two rare whales is stirring up a lot of talk among marine biologists because of how rare it is. The whales are two of a species that has an estimated total population of 370, and they were spotted in an area that is not commonly visited by this type of whale.

GULF SHORES, Ala. ( WALA) - A boat captain spotted two whales off the Alabama coast Sunday morning near Perdido Pass in Baldwin County. Bobby Kelly, owner of Miss Brianna Fishing Charters, says he was the first to spot the two whales around 8:00 am Sunday, Feb 2. He snapped pictures and videos that quickly took social media by storm.

Two female right whales traveled across the U.S. Gulf coast during the winter which is rare for the endangered whales, according to researchers.
