Five people have been arrested in New York and charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota, whom police say was tortured and abused for weeks before his death.

Five people have been charged by New York State Police with second-degree murder in the killing of a missing man from Minnesota who authorities said died following repeated acts of violence and torture for more than a month.

Police said the victim suffered "prolonged physical and psychological abuse at the hands of multiple individuals" before his death.
