New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state is temporarily shutting down all live bird markets in New York City and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties through February 14 after inspectors discovered seven cases of bird flu in poultry.

Roughly 80 live poultry markets in the five boroughs and Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties will be closed this week after some markets in the city tested positive for a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu over the past week, said Elizabeth Wolters, deputy commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.

The order also temporarily shuts down all bird markets in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties after 7 cases were detected in NYC poultry.
