Drone maker DJI is dragging the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to court because it feels the government has labeled it a Chinese military company without evidence.

In a previously unreported letter seen by Reuters, DJI notified distributors that U.S. Customs and Border Protection is citing the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) in withholding some drones from being imported into the U.S.

DJI claims it operates solely in the commercial sector with no military ties, disputing the Pentagon's designation.

The China-based maker of more than half of all commercial drones in the U.S. went to court to fight its placement on a list of companies said to be working with the Chinese military.

China-based DJI sued the U.S. Defense Department on Friday for adding the drone maker to a list of companies allegedly working with Beijing's military, saying the designation is wrong and has caused the company significant financial harm.

Two years after the Defense Department added DJI to a list of companies thought to have ties to the Chinese military, the drone maker says it has 'no alternative' other than to sue.
