The Dallas Cowboys were predicted to cut ties with former first-round pick Trey Lance, who was predicted to sign with the New York Jets.

Dallas Cowboys CEO and co-owner Stephen Jones revealed on Monday that the organization expects Trey Lance to depart in free agency, ending a bizarre two-year tenure in Dallas. The Cowboys traded for Lance ahead of the 2023 season when the San Francisco 49ers turned to Brock Purdy as their franchise quarterback.

In addition to Lance's departure, Cooper Rush, who's played seven seasons in Dallas, is set to be an unrestricted free agent. The Cowboys could look to the free-agent market and try to lure a backup with starting experience such as Justin Fields or Drew Lock to fill the void.

The Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to take a look at Lance. The club is now ready to invest in another young quarterback.

Lance, who made his first start for the Cowboys in 2024, is among the most important names to watch this offseason.
