A controversial Tysons casino bill has lived longer than any of its predecessors, advancing to a full Senate vote soon.

The Virginia Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee voted 9 to 6 Tuesday to send the Tysons casino bill to the full Senate. The bill would give Fairfax County the ability to ask voters if they want a casino in Tysons.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia's Democratic-led Senate on Tuesday passed constitutional amendments on abortion and voting rights that were quickly lambasted by Republicans who could use the issues as the party tries to regain ground in November's statewide elections.

A bill that would pave the way for a casino in Tysons has taken another important step forward in Richmond. It could go further than past attempts.

Virginia lawmakers this week killed three anti-transgender bills. The Virginia Senate Health and Education Committee on Thursday tabled Senate Bill 749, which would have banned trans athletes from school sports teams that correspond with their gender identity. The same committee on Thursday tabled a similar measure, Senate Bill 1079.

A Virginia Senate committee voted Wednesday in favor of moving the Tysons casino bill forward. The committee voted  9-3 in favor of the casino, with Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, abstaining. The bill would allow a Las Vegas-style casino resort in Tysons near the mall and Metro’s Silver Line.

The Tysons casino plan has faced controversy, drawing both supportive and oppositional reactions from Virginia residents and organizations.
