A member of Kyle Shanahan's staff at the San Francisco 49ers, declined an interview to become the head coach of the New York Jets for the 2025 NFL season.

Robert Saleh was sacked by the New York Jets, and while all eyes are on the Aaron Glenn era, it’s not over for the former head coach in the NFL. Over the past few days while the dust settled on the hirings of Glenn as coach and Darry Mougey as general manager in New York, Saleh has returned home… in a sense.

The San Francisco 49ers hired former New York Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer to take over a unit that has struggled for years under coach Kyle Shanahan.

Following his dismissal as head coach of the New York Jets, Robert Saleh has wasted no time finding his next opportunity in the NFL. The former Jets leader has returned to the San Francisco 49ers, where he previously thrived as defensive coordinator.

Brant Boyer was announced Monday as the 49ers’ new special teams coordinator, a role he held the past nine season with the Jets, where he overlapped and worked under coach Robert Saleh, who was re-hired Friday as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

The Jets fired Saleh in the middle of the season, naming Jeff Ulbrich as the interim head coach. While they interviewed Ulbrich for the big job, they chose to go a different route, naming former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach.

Robert Saleh cannot personally create turnovers, rush the passer or stop the run. His return as the 49ers’ D-coordinator is no guarantee of success.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco intends to play in 2025, marking his 18th NFL season. The 40-year-old signal-caller spent his first 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, who selected him in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Sorensen won’t be returning to the 49ers coaching staff after being fired as their defensive coordinator after the 2024 season. Shanahan told reporters at his end of season press conference that he hoped Sorensen would stay on the staff, possibly as the special teams coordinator.

The 49ers on Monday hired former New York Jets assistant coach Brant Boyer as special teams coordinator.
