After vocal pushback from violence interrupters — including a pastor who threatened the council members this week — the Minneapolis City Council voted Thursday to a proposal to move two violence prevention programs to the county.

The debate descended into some personal attacks and became sort of a proxy war for bigger political battles at Minneapolis City Hall.

McAfee is the founder nonprofit violence prevention group 21 Days of Peace, which the Star Tribune reports has received $3 million in Legislature-directed funding in recent years, while his church won a $300,000 contract from the city to carry out a de-escalation initiative.

After a lengthy and sometimes heated discussion, the Minneapolis City Council voted Thursday to indefinitely postpone a proposal to have Hennepin County temporarily oversee two of the city’s violence intervention programs.
