Broker fees are an unfair cost for renters, and they should not be on the hook to pay for someone they didn’t hire,” Healey said.

Gov. Maura Healey announced Monday that her upcoming budget proposal will include language to require broker's fees be paid by whoever originally hired the broker — usually the landlord.

Getting rid of the fees, usually one month's rent will make it "possible for more young people, seniors and families to stay in Massachusetts," Healey said Monday.

The Bay State will spend upwards of $8 billion over the next ten years improving its roads, bridges and regional transportation services if a proposal announced by the governor Tuesday is passed by the legislature.

Under Massachusetts law, landlords are only supposed to require tenants to pay first- and last-month rent, a security deposit, and key- and lock-related costs, but in practice the fees are charged in many transactions. State regulations govern broker-fee disclosures.
