A weather system moving in from the west will bring snow to much of North Carolina and parts of South Carolina. WBTV has been tracking the storm for days, and the timing of it all

The Charlotte area woke up Saturday to less than a half-inch of snow and ice from the region's first winter storm in three years. Forecasters warn that black ice could be a danger on some roads and sidewalks.

The expectation is always for a winter wonderland, but we usually get the dreaded sleet and freezing rain, which cuts down on snow totals a bit.

Charlotte has a 90% chance of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the approaching system, National Weather Service meteorologists said.

Snow began to fall in the Charlotte metro area shortly before 3 p.m., sparking excitement and wonder among kids and adults alike. Forecasters are expecting areas north of uptown Charlotte to see the highest snowfall amounts.

It should start as snow in Charlotte before at some point changing to sleet and freezing rain. There is still some uncertainty when it comes to exactly how much snow we will see here in Charlotte. All snow is expected farther northwest with up to 6 inches possible in the mountains.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says it will resume a normal schedule. Some other districts announced later starts or closures.

Take it slow on the roads and allow extra following distance if you must head out through Saturday morning. Temperatures will remain below freezing.

Thursday will be cold as highs only touch the 40s around uptown and stay limited to the 20s in our mountains. Winds will be breezy out of the north-northwest between 5 and 10 miles per hour and gust as fast as 20 miles per hour at times.
