The Doomsday Clock now stands at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest to catastrophe in its nearly eight-decade history.

The clock has moved 23 times before, getting as far away as 11:43 in 1991 thanks to successful nuclear disarmament talks with the US and the USSR. But that was more an outlier than anything else.
