In a major government shake-up, Palmerston, the cat who left the British Foreign Office in 2020, will come out of retirement and take up a new posting working with the governor of Bermuda.

The former rescue feline joined the British diplomatic service in 2016 and gained a large following online for fulfilling his duty with charisma. He retired in 2020 but is back in action now.

Palmerston, former chief mouser at the U.K. Foreign Office, announced he was coming out of retirement in a satirical X post. The post reads, “Diplomacy and a purr-fect role have lured me out of retirement.

Palmerston, who is named after the longest-serving British Foreign Secretary, Lord Palmerston, arrived in government in April 2016 as a rescue cat. He was regarded with affection and showered with treats by Foreign Office staff, occasionally bringing them dead mice in return.
