WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand will introduce looser visa rules to allow holiday makers to work remotely while visiting the country, to boost its tourism sector and economy, it said on Monday.

New Zealand is making a play for the world’s remote workers by relaxing visitor visa rules to allow working while on holidays. Digital nomads – people who work remotely while travelling – are being encouraged to see New Zealand as the “ideal place to visit and work while they do it”, the NZ government said.

The new visa rules will allow travellers to extend their time in the country. However, working for more than 90 days could have tax implications.

While the United States, Canada and several European Union Member states are imposing stringent immigration restrictions, New Zealand has decided to join the Digital Nomad bandwagon by allowing visitor visa holders to work remotely for an overseas employer or client.
